About the event

Emilia

by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm

Winner of the 2020 Olivier Award for Best Comedy Play

'Men, who forgetting they were born of women, nourished of women, and if they were not of the means of women, they would be quite extinguished out of the world, and a final end of them all; do like vipers deface the wombs wherein they were bred' ~ Emilia Bassano

In 1611 Emilia Bassano penned these words to her 'Vertuous Reader', as part of a volume of radical, feminist, and subversive poetry.

It was one of the first published collections of poetry written by a woman in England.

The little we know of Emilia Bassano is restricted to the possibility that she may have been the 'Dark Lady' of Shakespeare's Sonnets.

The rest of Her Story has been erased by History.

Commissioned specifically for Shakespeare's Globe and now making its Western U.S. debut, with an all-female cast, it reveals the life of Emilia: poet, mother, and feminist.

Every production from Women's Theatre Collective donates part of its profit to women's causes.  Our production of Emilia is raising funds for Single Mom Strong, a local non-profit organization whose mission is to empower single mothers and their children through enrichment, encouragement, and educational programs.

Rated Mature due to language, some violence, and mature themes.

Limited ADA is available at this venue. If you need an ADA accommodation notify WTC before you attend the event.

A note about the venue: Emilia is performed outdoors on the lawn at The Hut in Fair Oaks Village.  Folding chairs are provided.  Please feel free to bring cushions, blankets, and whatever else will make you comfortable!  Street parking is available around the village.
